I recently finished reading The Marriage Plot and, much as I love Jeffrey Eugenides, it was a chore to get through. Judging by reviews, I’m the only one who felt that way. One image that appealed to me however was that of Madeleine, the English major, holed up in her New England abode, reading Austin and Elliot. Though the WASP-y heroine favored buttondowns and twinsets, I imagine her pulling a chunky knit over a floral maxi dress and curling up with a mug of strong, sweet tea.
