Oh! Come on!

Foals have been nominated for Best New Band at this year’s NME awards.

I love Foals. I first heard of them last July when the Skins Secret Party started appearing online (featuring Foals of course). Mathletics and Hummer became firm favourites on all my playlists.

While I would be delighted for them if they won, it could prove to be more of a curse than a blessing. Last year’s winner of this accolade was Klaxons, a band now considered to be ‘uncool’ and strictly for teeny boppers. (I still love them but hey, who ever said I was cool…)

2005 saw Razorlight take the title. In the three years since then, I can only name one of their songs (America) but know that frontman Johnny Borrell is a twat.

On the other hand, Artic Monkeys won in 2006 and Kings of Leon in 2004, both great bands still doing well.

The Awards take place on February 28 in London’s Docklands.

Foals’ debut album Antidotes is due to be released on March 26 and they are playing Whelans, Dublin on March 6.

  • “Best New Band” is a reason I don’t really follow award shows. Sure the band is rockin’, but I find the British media hypes bands up way too much. The Klaxons were what everyone was talking about, and I didn’t hear it. The more people talked, the more I listened, but I never really got in to it.

I’m glad I didn’t buy in to the hype, Kings of Leon are still one of my favourite bands, but NME doesn’t have a great track record since then.

  • Hype is really what kills bands… which makes me sound like a music snob (one look at my iTunes shows that I’m SO not!).
Hype = novelty bands. Hardly any bands have staying power any more. It’s sad.
