Firstly I would like to point out that one of the top search engine terms that people used to find my blog yesterday was ‘Zac Efron pubes’.
There are some sick people out there.
Moving swiftly on…
Simon Amstell, presenter of Never Mind The Buzzcocks, is one of the funniest men on telly at the moment. He used to present Popworld with Miquita Oliver back in the day. I don’t care. I didn’t watch it (but have since youtubed clips of it). I DO however watch/enjoy/love Never Mind The Buzzcocks.
He’s 28. He’s Jewish. He looks like a hobbit. He’s gay. And he’s very very funny.
Foals have been nominated for Best New Band at this year’s NME awards.
I love Foals. I first heard of them last July when the Skins Secret Party started appearing online (featuring Foals of course). Mathletics and Hummer became firm favourites on all my playlists.
While I would be delighted for them if they won, it could prove to be more of a curse than a blessing. Last year’s winner of this accolade was Klaxons, a band now considered to be ‘uncool’ and strictly for teeny boppers. (I still love them but hey, who ever said I was cool…)
2005 saw Razorlight take the title. In the three years since then, I can only name one of their songs (America) but know that frontman Johnny Borrell is a twat.
On the other hand, Artic Monkeys won in 2006 and Kings of Leon in 2004, both great bands still doing well.
The Awards take place on February 28 in London’s Docklands.
Foals’ debut album Antidotes is due to be released on March 26 and they are playing Whelans, Dublin on March 6.
When it comes to magazines, I tend to stick with the likes of Vogue, Marie Claire and Company, and pick up the odd free copy of Mongrel(it’s just so darn cool). I don’t buy music mags…anymore. As a kid I was all about Smash Hits and Top Of The Pops but that was mostly for the free posters. I don’t read Hot Press or NME. I don’t like magazines telling me who I should and should not be listening to and hyping up a certain band so much that they lose all credibility, becoming nothing more than a novelty band.
So the fact that a brand spanking new and shiny Irish music magazine is due to hit our shelves on March 6 does not have me jumping for joy.
State magazine is the so-called ‘brainchild’ of international music photographer Roger Woolman. The monthly mag is aimed at ‘The Electric Picnic’ generation (apparently that means aged 25-40).
There’s already an online version (clickety-click).
Its writers are based in New York, Los Angeles, Montreal, Tokyo, Australia and Berlin (the coolest places in the world obviously…) and will cover digital music as well as albums released in Ireland.
I’ll probably pick up a copy, just to see what it’s like.
Current location:
The kitchen of my family home in Listowel, Co Kerry
Wearing:
It’s after 2pm and I’m still in my pyjamas (yellow pig printed bottoms and a random navy tshirt)
Reading: The February issues of both Vogue and Company, and Those Faraday Girls that I bought for mom for Christmas.
Watching: Season 21 of Never Mind The Buzzcocks. Simon Amstell is ace.
Listening to: The Juno soundtrack on repeat. My family think I’m schizo. The last time I was home I was blaring Digitalism and Crystal Castles and now it’s all about The Kinks and Kimya Dawson.
Drinking: Tea. And lots of it.
Loving: Being at home. It’s lovely.
Last bought: the aforementioned magazines and a train ticket.
Petrified by: The future.
Looking forward to: Semester 2. It’s going to be the best. And last. *tear*
In the meantime: I’ll content myself with my daily blog surfing, listening to new music, writing and learning my R&J and VM lines.
The London 5-piece are not expected to release their debut album until Summer ‘08 because they’re currently doing their A Levels(!). I like them. They kinda remind me of The Kooks… but if The Kooks aren’t your cup o’ tea, don’t let that put you off.
